I have an interview for a lifeguarding position tomorrow and have never been interviewed?

March 102010

Are there any tips you could give me, questions they could ask, anything that could help me out a bit?

Each interview will be different, but many will ask the same sort of questions. They will probably ask you to start by telling them a little about yourself. Make sure you tell them what you want them to know. Don’t just say, "Uh. I like to swim". Try to tie in ANY relevant experiences you have. For instance, maybe you have watched a little brother or sister swim to make sure they were being safe. Tell them that! Be friendly.
They will probably ask you a few scenario type questions- like, "What would you do if…" respond honestly, as over-thinking these types of questions makes it seem like you re just trying to say what they want to hear.
At the end, they will ask if you have any questions. Make sure you ask at least one, but still sound like you know a little about the job. So, don’t ask, "Where will I be working?" Instead, try something like, "I know I will be working at XYZ Pool, but what would my hours be like?" This shows that you have done some research on your own and are really into the job.
Stay calm. Be confident. Smile!
Good luck!

Community swimming pool closes due to lawsuit

March 82010

“When there are frivolous lawsuits, I don’t think that the people realize what an impact they’re going to have on the entire community.”

Evelyn Graham
Mt. Laurel Pool
Hazleton, Pennsylvania

When the Mt. Laurel Pool in Hazleton, Pennsylvania closed, the community was devastated. “A lot of kids lived for that. They loved it,” says Paul Wanuga, a Hazleton resident. “And it was good because it kept kids out of trouble” in a community where residents say there is too much vandalism and crime. But a lawsuit shuttered the pool, and the once pristine facility is now in shambles.

The pool and its founder, Evelyn Graham, welcomed thousands of swimmers every summer for more than ten years. Mt. Laurel Pool provided a gathering place for families and neighbors and summer jobs for teenagers. One former lifeguard says, “When you’re younger, it is difficult to find a place of employment, and Evelyn gave us that opportunity to have a place to learn good work ethics.”

One summer, despite rules painted on the sidewalk and a warning from the lifeguard, a man ran and jumped into the pool, cutting his heel. “There was nothing we did wrong. He did it to himself,” the pool manager says. The lifeguard and manager cleaned and bandaged the cut, and the manager recalls that he said “Its nothing. It’s just a little cut… No problem.”

But, later, Mt. Laurel Pool was sued. The man and his wife claimed $100,000 for the injury, and Graham’s lawyers recommended that she settle what she considered to be a wildly frivolous case. She was baffled, and, fearing copy cat lawsuits, she decided to close the pool.

In the end, it was the community that suffered most. Hazleton families no longer have a place to swim, and everyone from the ticket takers to the management lost their jobs. “They sue when they shouldn’t sue,” Wanuga says. “But then we have lawyers who thrive on it. They love it. They wish you would sue, too.”

“Im sure they have other motives in mind,” says a former lifeguard, “but they can’t possibly take into consideration what it’s doing to everybody else.”

Bodysurfer dies at wedge

The explosive “Wedge” surf break in Newport Beach has left generations of daredevils with broken bones and concussions. On Friday, with waves topping 20 feet, it killed a man — a rare death at a place that would seem to invite it.

An unidentified bodysurfer was thrown against the rock jetty that produces the Wedge’s outsized waves at about 12:30 p.m. Newport Beach lifeguards pulled him aboard their boat and he later died at nearby Hoag Memorial Hospital, authorities said.

Large waves pound south-facing beaches
“There was a relatively small group of bodysurfers and boarders in the water,” said Jim Turner, a Newport Beach lifeguard battalion chief. “On the shore, there were in excess of a thousand spectators.”

A high-surf warning has been in effect for Southern California. Lifeguards along the coast reported a higher than average number of rescues Friday and were bracing for more of the same today and Sunday.

“We’re advising all beachgoers to talk to lifeguards to find out where that safe place is to swim,” said Orange County lifeguard Capt. Terry Harvey. “We are prepared for a busy weekend.”

Despite its fierce reputation, the Wedge’s lifeguard tower is generally shuttered. But on Friday, Turner said lifeguards were on duty there and a patrol boat was stationed offshore.

“We knew it was going to be big all day,” he said.

The physics of the Wedge have earned it an international cult following. Incoming waves carom off the rock jetty that protects Newport Harbor and slam into following swells. The result are giant tubes that thunder to shore at speeds reaching 30 mph.

The inexperienced get tossed around like rag dolls trapped in a commercial washing machine. Even experts who get sucked into the Wedge’s steep break can be flung into the air or slammed into the shallow, sandy bottom.

“They have an exciting time and entertain thousands of people,” Turner said.

Yet the Wedge, he said, is far from the most perilous beach in town. The beach at Newport Pier, with throngs of children and inexperienced swimmers, keep lifeguards running from rescue to rescue during the summer.

Deaths at the Wedge are rare.

“I can’t recall the last one,” said Turner, who has spent a career protecting people from the ocean. “The last fatality there was maybe 20 years ago.”

Is finding a lifeguard job hard?

March 82010

I would assume that finding a job as lifeguard would be extremely hard. So many kids want to do this because its easy and pays well.
So are there a lot of people that apply to be lifeguards but dont get accepted or is it pretty easy as long as you pass the course?

Easy? Omg, you have not been through the training. The full lifeguard training includes three full courses (about 12 sessions each course) and one Standard First Aid course (which takes two full days to complete). Most also require another 12 session pre-instructor course with 8 volunteer hours and a final instructor course with 12 volunteer hours.

So, it definitely eliminates a lot of people who are eligible to apply. There are still lots of people applying, but defintiely not as much as other jobs (i.e. fast food restaurants). Give it a try, most likely they do hire if you qualify.
