Help. What was this lifeguard doing? Need lots of answers!!!?

September 292009

Okay, this happened last week. I’m going back to the pool tuesday. Well, I was standing on the outside edge of the pool waiting for my friends to throw the ball to me. He got up out of the lifeguards chair and walked right behind me. I could just put my hand back slighty and be able to touch him. There was nobody in his way to make him walk that close, he had plenty of space to walk not as close to me. He would walk to the ladder (not that far) and right back behind me for 10 minutes. Then on my way to the bathroom he was walking the other way and he walked so close to me I almost ran into a trashcan trying to scoot over. There was plenty of room to walk on his side. He is probably max 2 years older than me. I really don’t know what to do. I am going to the pool tuesday and he will probably be there!! i need lots of answers thanks

You need to just give him an ugly look and let him know ur not interested!

How do you got to dress up for a lifeguard job interview?

September 292009

The person who suggested you always dress up is correct. Wear a nice suit or great button-front shirt, khakis and tie. Make sure you wear nice shoes. Your outfit reflects our seriosuly you will be taking your job and they DO look at what you are wearing.

requirements if applying for the job of a lifeguard?

September 292009

i want to apply for a job as a lifeguard in fairfax, virginia. what all courses and cetifications am i supposed to take for it? please help!

Red Cross Lifesaving card that shows you passed the course. Any swim coach at a local high school or college or community pool can help you apply. Or call the Red Cross. It is not hard. You tread water for a while. Then you save people using 3 different methods. You learn how to approach drowning people so they don’t drown you.

Later you can get your Senior Lifeguard card.

Does Ohio have lifeguard manning requirements for pools and beaches?

September 292009

The normal for about every state (I know its law in Illinois)…one lifeguard chair for every 20 square feet or a lifeguard may be posted in a special area because of environmental concerns. It also may change depending on which chairs are cut. so its a flexible law
but this is illinois

What is the difference betwwen Jeff Ellis Lifeguarding cerification and the red cross?

September 292009

What is the difference between Jeff Ellis Lifeguarding Certification and The Red Cross?

Jeff Ellis and Associates Lifeguarding is more thorough then Red Cross. Many of the recent changes in CPR, etc that have occurred just recently with Red Cross, Ellis and Associates has been using for years. Ellis and Associates also audits their lifeguards, meaning they send people around to pools where Ellis lifeguards work, and watch them to make sure they are scanning the pool (10-20!!), and rescue ready at all times. Ellis lifeguarding is also a license which can be revoked if a guard is found to be unable to do their job.
Red Cross is more widely accepted, but that is because facilities must be clients of Jeff Ellis in order to have Ellis Lifeguards.

I want to get my lifeguard certification next spring, how can I get in shape?

September 292009

I’ve heard lifeguard testing can be hard, I work at a pool now where I help with swim lessons, but I don’t really swim a lot. I need a way to make sure I can pass the test in the spring. Help!

I’m not sure what they require where you’re going to get certified but when I got certified I had to:

300 Yd. Swim

There is no minimum time requirement, but stopping for any reason is not allowed

a) 100 yds of front crawl with rhythmic breathing to the side or front
b) 100 yds of breaststroke
c) 100 yds of either breaststroke or front crawl, this last 100 may be mixed

2) 3 step retrieval

a) 20 yd swim

b) Feet First surface dive to the bottom of the pool for a 10 lb. object that is 8-12 ft. deep

c) 20 yd swim back to the starting point with both hands supporting the object

How long does lifeguard training take and am I old enough?

September 292009

I’m fifteen and I want to go through lifeguard training, but I’m wondering how long this would take and if I’m old enough?

To get to your NLS level you need your bronze cross first. The age pre-requisite is 13 so you’re in the clear there. Now before you take your bronze cross, you need your bronze med. Some places offer a Bronze Cross + Bronze Med + Standard First Aid with CPR-C as a crash course, which takes 40 hours. Then you have to get your NLS, which also takes 40 hours. You must be 16 to get your NLS.

In short: 80 hours minimum, minimum age for NLS is 16, but you can get your cross at 15.

How to become a beach-certified lifeguard in Miami?

September 292009

Hi everyone, I would appreciate if people that are certified lifeguards would tell me their story of how they became lifeguards. I’m interested in becoming a lifeguard this summer, if possible. I am 40, i can swim, i can dive. What else do I need to know to become a lifeguard? Do you know of schools or academies where I can take lifeguard training class and to learn how to do the CPR and other things. I would really appreciate that any certified lifeguard give me his/her advise.

How do the lifeguards know who is drowning?

September 292009

Some people may cry wolf and fool around in the pool pretending to drown or if someone doesn’t come up out of the water and puts their head in the water very long and holds their breath under water for so long, sometimes the lifeguard may think something is wrong. So how would the lifeguards know? Especially if you are treading water in the deep end a lot and it may look like someone is drowning so how would the lifeguard know who is and who is not drowning? Its hard to tell especially in the wavepool.

There are certain signs that a drowning (distressed) victim gives off. Like they will stay in one place, their hair might be in their face and they might bob up and down in the water.
You are told in lifeguard training, "If you don’t know, GO". So better be safe than sorry. Plus lifeguards that work in a wave pool usually have to under go extra training and certification. At least that is how it is at Hurricane Harbor.
