is 40 hours too much to work a week?

October 312009

hi i im a lifeguard and my mom wants me to work full time 40 hours a week and my local beach but i really dont wanna work that much..i would much rather work part time like 20 hours a week at a gym/pool or somethign like that. i already have the beach job but i dont wanna do it. im 16 and it would be mon-fri and sometimes sat. it would be from 9am to 5pm i think. is 40 hours too much to work for a kid for the whole summer? i dont wanna waste my summer away sitting on a lifeguard chair.
im 16, and its for the whole summer.
no i really dont need money for anything besides a car and i already have enough for that because i worked a crapload last summer and this summer i would rather take it easy and train for the fall sports and stuff.
all i wanted to know was if i should work full time or part time. i still have to work..not working is outta the question/

what anyone on YA thinks is totally irrelevant………..
you need to have this conversation with your mom.

as long as you live in her house you live by her rules…..
a very simple concept.
discuss with her your thoughts and concerns, don’t argue…talk!

communication is a great tool……..when used!

How hard is the ARC lifeguard training course?

October 312009

Im 15 years old and am going to take the American Red Cross lifeguard course for a job I was offered in pensacola FL. I already mastered the 300 yard swim and the 10 lb object retrieval but I was just wondering what the class would be like and if it is hard.

You should have no problems passing the course if you can complete all the requirements. The critical element for this course is the instructor who will be teaching the course. It is his/her personal opinion on how well you do and if you meet his/her standards.

Does anyone know what you have to do to become a lifeguard?

October 312009

I want to apply to some pools this summer but i dont want to apply without having the proper requirements and i want to know what i am talking about? does anyone know what certifications you have to have to qualify as a lifeguard?

most pools require you to have lifeguard training from American Red Cross. You didnt say where you are from so you will have to find them by your self. One way is to ask the pool and someone can probably help you find a class, another way is to google American Red Cross Lifeguard and your city or you can try to find it on their website. http://www.redcross.org/ You will be required to swim, i think, 300 yards, do back boarding (which requires a lot of treading of water) and cpr and First Aid. Its a very easy class and it pays for its self when you get a job.

Does anyone know where to take a lifeguarding skills test in houston?

October 312009

Okay….I am looking for a Jeff Ellis and Associates skills test in the houston area. I want to take the online course, but I don’t know how to find testing facilities in my area. Has anyone ever been lifeguards certified by Ellis and Associates in the Houston area? Does anyone know where I can take a skills test?

I found this by googling Jeff Ellis & associates Houston Tx. It has a different tabs when you link to it & one is life guard, & will help with what you are looking*

what is better, american red cross or ellis & associates lifeguard certification?

October 312009

I am looking for information comparing the 2 certification processes. Things like which CPR proceedures are better, and which lifeguards are better off as far as correct knowledge in the field goes.

They will both teach the same thing, since it is so regulated, so not one is really better than the other. It really does just depend on the name. Like someone else mentioned, the Red Cross is more widely recognized.

How hard is lifeguard training?

October 312009

I will be taking the American Red Cross lifeguard training program through the Minneapolis YMCA. My question is basically what do you do there? Do you have to be an amazing swimmer or can you be just good? The course is in two months so if I begin swimming three times a week for an hour each time will I become a good enough swimmer for the course? I am already an average swimmer and I run everyday so I think I am in good enough shape. Any input would be great thanks in advance.
I am seventeen if that helps anyone.

Overall the ARC lifeguard coarse isn’t that hard. At first the written tests are strange but as the course progresses then it’ll become common sense. I found the first aid came very easily to me.
You need to be a good swimmer, most of all you have to be DETERMINED. You may have to rescue a person whose double your weight. You may have to pull them to the surface from the bottom of a 12 ft. pool. That’s hard but you can do it.
To prepare for the course its good to do what your doing, but also you need to practice holding your breathe, it’ll make the rescuing a lot easier.
You’ll have fun with the course and you get to meet new people. My lifeguard class still keeps in contact and we’ll remind each other of funny situations when they had to rescue us and they had no idea what they were doing. This is my personal favorite that happened to me. I was playing victim (this also works on your acting skill) I was suspected of having a neck injury. I was in the pool so they had to strap me on the backboard. There’s a certain way to strap people on the board. Anyway these to guys had me strapped on but they started to argue if they did it right. They had the edge of the board on the side of the pool very lightly but they we’re holding the board except for when they argued. The board sank in the water with ME still strapped onto the board. Needless to say our instructor threw a huge fit. I was rescued. I still never let those guys forget that.

How hard is it to become a beach Lifeguard (RLSS)?

October 312009

I really want to become a beach lifeguard, I’ve always been fairly good at swimming breaststroke but not overly good at swimming front crawl. For the timed swim which is 400 metres in 8 minutes I’m probably going to have to swim front crawl however the course I want to do is in about 5 weeks. So far I aways seem to run out of breathe after about 2 (25 metre) lengths, which is due mainly to bad technique I know and i’m trying to have lessons to help with that. I know its difficult to answer the question for someone you’ve never met/seen swim, but do you think its achieveable to get good enough at front crawl in a 5 week time frame? and what are the best ways to improve front crawl technique and time?

Thanks for your help

There’s no way you’ll become a beach lifeguard like that.
You have to work all year long for it, because just the preliminary tests will be hell for you with those times, especially if you’re not that good at the front crawl.
Sorry.

Why should lifeguards have to wear one piece swimsuits all the time?

October 312009

I am a lifeguard and I work really hard to keep a great body. Why should I have to be trapped in a stupid one piece all day?

Its your job not a fashion show.
Would you go into an office in something you would wear to a club at night. I hope not! Save you two piece for a day at the beach. I wouldnt take your seriously if you came in a skimpy two piece.
