Where can I get a lifeguard job?

January 302010

I have a valid BM and Cpr Certificate…
Anyone knows of a club or a organisation which is recruiting part time lifeguards?

I’m not sure what a BM is but I do know that to even be considered, you need a valid and up to date lifeguarding certificate in addition to the CPR one.

Check with local pools, community centers, YMCA…etc. They should give you all the info you need.

Can sunglasses for lifeguarding be writtin-off on your taxes?

January 302010

Because I broke my old sunglasses. Also, how expensive can the sunglasses be that can be writtin-off is there a cutoff point.

Extra info:
I work in Scottsdale, AZ at a public pool

1. No.

2. Even if you could, you’d have to subtract 2% of your AGI *and* be able to itemize in order for a business deduction to do you any good.

Where to get my Lifeguard training?

January 302010

I need a job next summer, and would love to be a lifeguard with my friend, but I don’t know if I’m old enough to get certified, I’ve been looking on-line and haven’t been able to find much please help!

I live in Oklahoma and need to find a way to get certified, I will be 15 next summer but not until late may, I’m willing to make the trip to the place, I was just wondering if anyone could help me find a place to get certified

Here’s the answer I gave to a person asking about becoming a lifeguard in Texas, most of it should apply to becoming a lifeguard in Oklahoma http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AoQo5Y623pA2AASTlaG4NRDty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080724112915AAVmgph&show=7#profile-info-layV6N1Faa :
"Basically you will need to get certified by one of seven nationally recognized organizations (Texas might have a slightly different list of organizations).

Here is what I know about them:

United States Lifesaving Association (USLA)- this is for open water/ surf lifeguarding (on a beach)

Starfish Aquatics Institute (Starguard program)- I don’t know a whole lot about them. As I understand it they are a private risk management/ pool operations company that also certifies lifeguards.

YMCA- As far as I know this program is only used at YMCAs and some YMCAs use ARC or Ellis instead

Boy Scouts of America (BSA)- I don’t know a whole lot about this program either.

National Aquatic Safety Company (NASCO)- I’m not very familiar with NASCO.

American Red Cross (ARC)-probably the most common certification for pools. Form ARC you will usually need Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer to be hired as a lifeguard.

Jeff Ellis and Associates (EA, E&A, Ellis)- probably the most common certification for water parks and second most common for pools (they claim to certify guards for over 90% of privately owned water parks in the US). Ellis and Associates integrates lifeguarding, first aid, CPR and AED training all into one course.

There is a huge debate over Ellis vs. Red Cross, which if you want to learn more about it I would guess Google could find you plenty of material on the debate.

Some pools may have you apply for a job and then train you in the program they have selected.

Physical requirements vary from certification to certification and pool to pool. Requirements usually involve: a swim of some length sometimes with specified strokes and a surface dive to retrieve an object (sometimes a specified type of surface dive). Some companies will also include a treading water requirement like treading water for two minuets without hands."

As far as age you will probably be required to turn 15 before the last day of the course. Other certifications require you to be 16 of possibly older. Some facilities have their own age requirements.

I agree with sarah t, you should ask about the lifeguarding requirements and certification required at any facilities you want to work at. Some, as i mentioned before, will have different requirements than just the certification.

Good Luck!

I need help on passing the vision test to become a beach lifeguard?

January 302010

Why should female lifeguards have to wear 1-pieces?

January 302010

I work really hard to make myself look good. I don’t know why I should have to be trapped in a stupid 1-piece all day. They are tight, uncomfortable, and totally unflattering. Oh, and did I mention they are STUPID. I hate seeing other girls walking around the pool in their cute little bikinis while I’m sitting there tugging at my tight one piece begging to get out. What do others think? Is this fair?

Hmms, a one-piece is suitable for lifeguards, since the fact that they are able to give you optimal support in times of rescue-ing people form the pool. You wouldn’t want people to pull down your bikini top or untie your bikini bottom in times of panic, right? hhahas (:
So, I think if you really do not one to wear a one-piece, you can reconsider getting a two-piece swimsuit, with a racer-back top, which kinda look like a sports bra, as well as a really tight bottom. (: Lol.

Question about LifeGuard final examination?

January 282010

Okay, so for my lifeguard final examination test, i have to sit up in the lifeguard chair and recognize vicitms drowning. if they are passive, active, or distressed. my question is, when you go to save a passive victim, how would you know if they are just a regular passive submerged vicitm, or a passive victim with a spinal injury. Considering you have to perfrom different tasks on each, i need to know what kind of passive victim they are.

Well, if in my test someone submerges under the water, how am i supposed to know in my test if they have a spinal injury or not.

thanks.

and if anyone else has taken the American Red Cross lifeguarding class, is the final examination really hard. Thanks.

Technically, while watching the pool, you should have an idea of what happened to them, which would tell you whether or not they had a spinal injury or not. The final examination wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be when I took it, but they do make you do a passive victim with spinal injury because they want to make sure you know how to do it.

550 lifeguard requirement.?

January 282010

Tomorrow I am doing the mandatory 550 swim to take a life guarding course. (550 meters, or yards, i forget which). Anyway, I want to know what I should do to prepare. Is it good to eat a lot before doing this? or should I just eat a little bit? or nothing (seeing as its early in the morning). would an energy drink be a bad idea?

My word of advice: relax. (and meters, yards, same thing; just a couple seconds difference)
To prepare do a warm-up–twice as far as what your swimming probably. So 1100. nice and easy.
Stretch.
Eat a big breakfast. And a light-ish lunch. About an hour before you swim eat a granola bar, or just a light snack.
Energy drink=bad idea! No!
Water=good idea! Yes!
Drink a lot tonight, and enough tomorrow so that you’re good but not sick-feeling.

Do you have to be an amazing swimmer to do a lifeguarding course?

January 282010

Lifeguard certification – seeing underwater?

January 282010

I’m contemplating going for a Red Cross lifeguard training course but I have a few questions. My main question is about the part of the testing that’s in the water. I have poor vision and wear contacts so I can’t open my eyes under water unless the contacts are out and then I can hardly see a thing.

How big of a problem would this be? I think it would have the biggest impact on the dive to get a brick at the bottom of the pool but I don’t really know. Thank in advance.

When I took the lifeguarding class we were not allowed to use goggles so I just opened my eyes underwater to see the brick…
if you cannot do this position yourself on top of the brick and go straight down with your eyes closed and feel for the brick

The only other part you might have problems with is when you have to do your swim…but you should be able to use goggles for that
