Is finding a lifeguard job hard?

March 82010

I would assume that finding a job as lifeguard would be extremely hard. So many kids want to do this because its easy and pays well.
So are there a lot of people that apply to be lifeguards but dont get accepted or is it pretty easy as long as you pass the course?

Easy? Omg, you have not been through the training. The full lifeguard training includes three full courses (about 12 sessions each course) and one Standard First Aid course (which takes two full days to complete). Most also require another 12 session pre-instructor course with 8 volunteer hours and a final instructor course with 12 volunteer hours.

So, it definitely eliminates a lot of people who are eligible to apply. There are still lots of people applying, but defintiely not as much as other jobs (i.e. fast food restaurants). Give it a try, most likely they do hire if you qualify.

does any set of boyscout merit badges qualify you to lifeguard?

February 222010

i am 17 years old and i am almost an eagle scout. a have basically all the aquatics merit badges and plus i am a rather good swimmer. i qualified in 5th place to go to the ohio state champ meet. i want to know if these credentials would certify me to have a summer lifeguard job.

I am the Advancement Chair of our Troop as well as the mother of 2 Eagle Scouts and a female Venturer. Both my oldest son and my daughter have earned the BSA Lifeguard certificate and both have been hired as lifeguards with that certificate alone (no Red Cross Lifeguard certificate required). You cannot be hired as a Lifeguard with the aquatics merit badges alone, but having earned them will definitely help you to pass the Lifeguard course which is quite physically demanding and lengthy. I would suggest you call your local BSA council and ask them if a course is being offered in your area now. That way, you could finish the course and find employment for this summer. Most BSA camps offer the Lifeguard course at their camps and that’s where my oldest son earned his, but he had to wait until the next summer to find a job. My daughter took the course in the springtime through our local council finishing up the end of May and was employed by June. Good Luck! You sound like you are just what the guards need!

RESCUE ME: Bilbo, the Life Saving Newf

February 212010

Britain’s only lifeguard dog Bilbo made this special video appeal to get his job back. Bilbo a 14-stone Newfoundland made the Baywatch-style film to show himself in action after he was axed from his post in May 2008.

The seven-year-old Newfoundland, who has been credited with helping save three lives at Sennen Cove in Cornwall, lost his job when the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) decided that his services were no longer required.

But, the film and resultant petition must have worked, because this wonderful boy will back this summer (2009) working on the beach.

lifeguard job. looking for a little help here.?

February 202010

Im 16 and right now seems to be the hardest time to find a job. My friend use to be one until he left. He was it wasn’t that bad and its super easy with good money, which i would like. Im currently in a medical class so i already have my certification for CPR and first aid. I need to take a lifeguard class to get my certification in that. Im not sure who to call for the class but i think they give one at the place i was planning on getting a job at. I heard that class is like 50 or 60 dollars. so what happen is you take this class and pay your money but don’t get the job and end up wasting money on this? i would also like some advice for former lifeguard employees. thank you so much. :)

The best thing for you to do is ask at the place you want to apply to and find out what you need to do. I used to manage three leisure centres and started at 16 as a lifeguard. We used to employ someone then in their first few weeks pay for them to do the course. I know because of high staff turnover a lot of pools make you pay for your own course and give you a job in return. If you check the policy at this place to may be pleasently suprised, if not like the other person said you will still have the qualification and many other places will take you on. My one word of warning though is to check that the qualification is one which is widley known as there are lots of smaller exam bodies.

Getting ready for a lifeguard job?

February 112010

Well…I talked to an aquatics director of a pretty big water park in the area and he said that he would be more then happy to hire me as long as I can pass the swimming test that’s required for lifeguards and the usual brick dive. Problem is that I am kind of out of shape and the test is at the end of February. I do know how to swim but I need to get faster! I have very limited access to a pool now (being that it is winter) but what can I do out of the water to better help me prepare for this? I need to do really well because this is a large water park and has a lot of participants. Is there some type of workout program I can do out of the water that will help me out? Also should I wear regular trunks to the qualifying or the tight swimming trunks?

Since you said you have limited access to the pool, if you can go to work out center.

Do your running, (both spring and endurance) so planned 2km and treated as 1km in water etc

As for bricks, workout on your legs especially, remember you are suppose to use eggbeater to carry it not your arms.

I would highly recommend you spend the time you have access to pool for eggbeater practice since its the most difficult thing to do. (I still suck at it, using scissor kick sometimes which is not good)

What I would also recommend, is wear beach trunks when your practice in water and tight swim suit aka speedos on exam day. However, be prepare to keep working out because its unlikely you will be allow to wear swimming trunks. (we, lifeguard usually have to wear a shirt that’s drags really bad in water)

How hard is it to get a job as a lifeguard?

February 92010

I need to know how bad the job market is for lifeguards specifically. I will be getting my certification the end of this month, but my parents are against me getting it because of the recession. I have heard that there is actually a shortage of lifeguard’s, but I suppose if they are laying them off that would zero each other. So how bad is the lifeguard job market? I know people generally get hired in March, but I just want to make sure that I am not going to spend $200.00 on the test for nothing. I really want to be a lifeguard, but I do not have a lot of money to spend. Thanks in advance!
I understand you may think this is a stupid question, but like I said I really need to know if I have a better chance being a lifeguard versus getting a job in retail.

It isn’t usually difficult. There’s always a need for lifeguards because you need the strength/skill and certification. I got my lifeguarding job at the place I got my certification. Wherever there is a pool there is a need for lifeguards, unless they start closing pools you shouldn’t have a problem.

You have a much better chance at getting a job as a guard than a job in retail, anybody can work in retail. Being a lifeguard is more fun, too.
