Okay so ive applied to be a lifeguard at sixflags and splash town in san antonio tx.
Im not worried about the cpr training or the first aid training. Im worried about the swimming portion. I know how to swim but im not the strongest swimmer. My main problem is that i cannot tread water for that long.
What kind of swimming drills do lifeguards have to go through to be certified
i just did lifeguard training it was ok even tohugh i had lost my voice and had a biggg headache. we watch like 5 hours of a video, in all. It lasted a few days. we’d always start out swimming laps and we learned a bunch of saves, practiced them endlessly on eachother, dived 16 feet to retrieve a 10 pund weight, and practiced CPR on dummies. i oh and at the end we had to do a multiple choice exam but it was easy and everyone passed. i met lots of cool people so it was bearable.
ok so theres a pool near my house and it seems like every lifeguard there is or was on some sort of swim team. Do you have to have that kind of experience (like being on a swim team) to be a lifeguard? also what is lifeguard training like? thank you!
Lol. You do not need to know how to swim very well at all to be a lifeguard. I know buddies who can barely swim and they are head lifeguards. It helps however if you are a good swimmer. Here in town the requirement is 300 yards. Usually you need to know how to do the front crawl and the breaststroke. Lifeguard training is not very hard. It just is a really boring class filled with very cheesy videos.
The hardest skill is probably backboarding. But with practice it goes better. If you want additional practice usually the teachers are more than willing to accommodate you in your needs. The written tests are not very hard as well. I think you would have to be a rock to not pass.
It is a very good job and I hope that you do it and have fun with it. It is one of hte best summer jobs that you can possibly have. Just make sure that you are not a crappy lifeguard!!! You will lose the respect of the people you work with. Make sure that you are watching the pool and that your scanning is not jerky. But it is a very good job and I hope you have fun with it!
So yes, I am doing a 4 day lifeguard training course next week that will be from 9 to 6 everyday, and have become quite anxious about doing it. i am on a competitive swim team, so my swimming skills are good, but i have never participated in this type of training, let alone have a job. so if any of you guys have or known someone who has gone through the standard lifeguard training course would like to enlighten me on what happens/what is taught, that would be greatly appreciated.
It’s easy, they’ll teach you everything you need to know. I bet most people there are starting at the same level as you do.
You’ll learn different rescue situations, including drowning and spinal victim, some first aid stuff (i.e. bandaging, CPR)…etc.
It’s nothing to worry about. Trust me. And I’m not even a competitive swimmer

I am looking into getting a job as a lifeguard in MO, but I cannot figure out where to get the training. Is there anywhere between the lake of the Ozarks and Columbia that offers a course on lifeguarding? CPR?
Try YMCA, Red Cross or Jeff Ellis.
