I want to get my lifeguard certification next spring, how can I get in shape?

I’ve heard lifeguard testing can be hard, I work at a pool now where I help with swim lessons, but I don’t really swim a lot. I need a way to make sure I can pass the test in the spring. Help!

I’m not sure what they require where you’re going to get certified but when I got certified I had to:

300 Yd. Swim

There is no minimum time requirement, but stopping for any reason is not allowed

a) 100 yds of front crawl with rhythmic breathing to the side or front
b) 100 yds of breaststroke
c) 100 yds of either breaststroke or front crawl, this last 100 may be mixed

2) 3 step retrieval

a) 20 yd swim

b) Feet First surface dive to the bottom of the pool for a 10 lb. object that is 8-12 ft. deep

c) 20 yd swim back to the starting point with both hands supporting the object

  2. Suggest you practice swimming 500 yd to 600 yd demonstrating crawl and breaststroke.
Swim 20 yd to 50 yd, make surface dive to 8 ft to 12 ft deep and pick up 10 lb to 12 lb weight and swim back to starting point.
The more you can swim the better shape you will be to take the test.
