is 40 hours too much to work a week?
hi i im a lifeguard and my mom wants me to work full time 40 hours a week and my local beach but i really dont wanna work that much..i would much rather work part time like 20 hours a week at a gym/pool or somethign like that. i already have the beach job but i dont wanna do it. im 16 and it would be mon-fri and sometimes sat. it would be from 9am to 5pm i think. is 40 hours too much to work for a kid for the whole summer? i dont wanna waste my summer away sitting on a lifeguard chair.
im 16, and its for the whole summer.
no i really dont need money for anything besides a car and i already have enough for that because i worked a crapload last summer and this summer i would rather take it easy and train for the fall sports and stuff.
all i wanted to know was if i should work full time or part time. i still have to work..not working is outta the question/
what anyone on YA thinks is totally irrelevant………..
you need to have this conversation with your mom.
as long as you live in her house you live by her rules…..
a very simple concept.
discuss with her your thoughts and concerns, don’t argue…talk!
communication is a great tool……..when used!
Well, you know most of us don’t get to take off three months out of the year. We work OVER 40 hours EVERY week of the year.
Of course that is not too much.

I guess you don’t want any money, either?

No, it’s not too much.
It’s a normal job, get used to it. The WHOLE summer? A whole whopping 2-3 months? WOW. I’ve been working 40-50 hour weeks 50 weeks a year for the last decade or more and have to do so for another 30 years at least.
That’s life kid.

LOL, it is certainly going to give you a taste of adulthood.
40 hours a week is the standard for a 9-5 working class citizen.

In a few short years you will legally be an adult , and it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to get some experience in the real world . For the average american worker 40 hours per week just doesn’t pay the bills , so getting yourself in a routine of having to commit yourself for 40 hours a week isn’t a bad idea at this point in your life

That 40-hour week is not too much to expect. And at 16, it’s time to start being more adult about things. It is less than 1/4 of the hours in a week. You need to keep in shape for lifeguarding, so of course you are going to be exercising — part of your training for fall sports as well as a necessity to do your job.
If your mom says you need to work full-time for a couple months, you may be needing that money for college. Certainly you are going to be needing a whole lot more than a car in short order. So it is time to earn some money and save up for the future.
You will quickly discover that you are going to be needing a very great deal of money within the next 2 – 3 years. The economy is a real stinkeroo, and you are soon to hit adult expenses. You are very, very lucky to be able to work 40 hrs/wk and have such a good chance of getting your ducks in a row to protect you against coming difficulties.

Well that is really up too you. Lifeguards tend to make good money. And your only 16 so you don’t really have to work that many hours unless you want to make some extra money. Maybe you want to have some time to your self during the summer so I personally would have no more than 25-30 hours a week.
Your getting the experience; that’s all that counts
For now

I don’t think it’s too much work. You can use the money to have more fun experiences. Save up your money and spend it on few fun weekends or a few adventures. Or save the money for the maintenance bills/taxes you may eventually have to pay on your car.

No , that is typically the amount of hours you go to school a week except your getting paid.
Just make sure you make time to rest and be with your friends this summer.
