What shocks me the …
What shocks me the most from this vid is that the men are standing aside, with their hands in their pockets, wondering around, not asking if they can give a helping hand and (ones again) only two women are taking mathers in their own hands to help that unlucky person.

I am sure you run …
I am sure you run the perfect calls all alone there in Ireland. The engine and squad get on scene here right after the guard. They are the higher authority as it is their jurisdiction and they decide how the call will go. You have no idea what the lifeguard is saying to the patient cause you can’t hear it, and when the FD gets on scene they decide to C-Spine and treat major injuries before getting vitals etc…

Im a lifeguard my …
Im a lifeguard my self and we are trained to emt standard here in ireland. He didnt take any vital signs didnt start the o2 didnt use his pulse oximeter didnt check bp didnt get a history. Signs and symptoms, allergic to anything, any medications, last oral intake, pervious history, event leading up to that? He could have checked blood sugars come on man, thats the basic primary survey after your ABC

He did a primary …
He did a primary survey begining with PENMAN, then ABC, then LOC. And if you watch the clip, the next thing he does is call for backup and give a scene size-up followed by getting O2 from the truck (that is what is in the green bag). But you knew all that .

The lifeguard is …
The lifeguard is first checking for airway, breathing and circulation. Then he is checking the victims level of consciousness (also referred to as LOC). He then calls for backup. Not trying to act the part. Spinal immobilization is pretty hard to do on a patient that is intent on moving. He made sure the patient was in a position of comfort. Stop the hate. LOL. SAD.

as far as has been …
as far as has been my experience, thats pretty much the same most places; lifeguarding is generally looked at as a summer job for high-school kids, and as a result doesnt pay very much.

but there are …
but there are warning signs for all of these conditions that guards (at least ellis guards, i cannot speak for red cross) are trained to recognize; look for a medalert bracelet, see if you smell alcohol on them, most importantly ask them questions, ask if they have any friends or family members around that can help you discern if they have any medical conditions, or are taking any sort of medication.

He could have put him on oxygen and began a full set of vital signs and actually done a quick primary survey to rule out anything nasty

if he had a seizure then there is nothing that could have been done for him besides protect his spine and watch his airway, they did the right thing by not touching him

like i said to the other guy, he did the right thing. don’t try and help someone with a spinal injury unless you know first aid. just cal 911.

…
ImaginationAnimation, its a good thing he didn’t do anything, and left him there. It looked like he had a spinal injury. I am a lifeguard and if you are not certified in first aid, and you try to help someone, and they die or get more hurt, you can get sued.
