Overall the ARC lifeguard coarse isn't that hard. At first the written tests are strange but as the course progresses then it'll become common sense. I found the first aid came very easily to me.
You need to be a good swimmer, most of all you have to be DETERMINED. You may have to rescue a person whose double your weight. You may have to pull them to the surface from the bottom of a 12 ft. pool. That's hard but you can do it.
To prepare for the course its good to do what your doing, but also you need to practice holding your breathe, it'll make the rescuing a lot easier.
You'll have fun with the course and you get to meet new people. My lifeguard class still keeps in contact and we'll remind each other of funny situations when they had to rescue us and they had no idea what they were doing. This is my personal favorite that happened to me. I was playing victim (this also works on your acting skill) I was suspected of having a neck injury. I was in the pool so they had to strap me on the backboard. There's a certain way to strap people on the board. Anyway these to guys had me strapped on but they started to argue if they did it right. They had the edge of the board on the side of the pool very lightly but they we're holding the board except for when they argued. The board sank in the water with ME still strapped onto the board. Needless to say our instructor threw a huge fit. I was rescued. I still never let those guys forget that.
References :
American Red Cross Lifeguard

well basically you don't have to be an amazing swimming, you just have to be able to swim. you pretty much do scenarios and you have to help a victim. i thought it was really easy. you also learn cpr and how to use and aed. you learn how to save people treat them. it's basic and mostly common sense. and 17 is a good age to learn.
References :
It can't be that hard because if it was they would have requirements for how many laps you can swim, how fast you are, etc. to take the class. if you are training to become a real lifeguard at a real pool, they will have you swimming hundreds of laps. when you become a lifeguard, they usually make you swim about 30 laps in a certain time. so at this class they'll probably make you swim 50-100 laps at a time to improve your speed. you don't have to be an amazing swimmer but it would help to be good. hopefully you'll get better after the class. but if you are just going to this class to learn the basics, [like if you are 12 or 13 years old], they might just teach you the basics, like have you swim ten laps and teach you basic things you need to. it really depends on your age and how serious these people are on teaching you how to become a real lifeguard. but you'll also be learning CPR, etc. I'm sorry I can't help you that much but it would help if i knew your age and what kind of class this is. my sister is 10 and she took a class at the local community center where they would swim 5-10 laps at a time and than to things like CPR and swimming out to save a dummie that was "drowning." They also jumped off the lifeguard stand and did little things like that.
