What do I need to expect during Lifeguard Training next month?
April 282010
I’m an ok swimmer, I plan on taking the class next month, and I was just wondering what all you do during the class and what to expect. Thank You!
Many boring classes on first aid, CPR, and many various forms of rescue, aid, surveying, guarding, etc.
Well, it’s fun and good stuff to learn, but when I did it years ago it was boring. But paid off very well.
Yeah, be expected to swim a lot, probably sometimes with bricks. You’ll be expected to rescue people several times, usually your own classmates, and then finally your teacher (my teacher was a huge buff guy at about 270 lbs. I’m a great swimmer and I still barely passed doing a deep-water rescue with him. lol). You’ll do hands on training, learning how to put people in a splint, treat people who are suffering from shock, seizures, heart attacks, stroke, heatstroke, the works. Make sure you KEEP UP YOUR SKILLS throughout the years. I just applied here at my college along with 100 other people, and barely didn’t make it in because I’d forgotten everything about a deep water rescue. (shame shame). Basically, look through your Red Cross Lifeguard manual, pretty much you’ll learn everything in it.

I found this on a red cross site. 3 years ago it was 500 yards non-stop and for whatever reason they lowered it
- Must swim 300 yards continuously as follows:
• 100 yards Front crawl with rhythmic breathing, propelling kick.
• 100 yards Breaststroke that includes the pull, breathe, kick, and glide sequence.
• 100 yards Combo of front crawl/breaststroke.
- Must successfully complete the following scenario:
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object and must hold with both hands, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. This is to be done within one minute and forty seconds.
