This is my Tribute to the Royal Danish Life Guard that has now in 350 years protected and guard the king and the royal family of denmark.

The Danish Royal Life Guard / The Royal Guard

The Original Lifeguards personnel were recruits.
This means that the Guardsmen’s were fast employee of professional soldiers. First at the end of 1700, did the recruitment went over to discharge people personnel from Denmark and Norway. That in that time to 1814 was a part of Denmark.
Later on did they use normal military service personnel. Young Danish people.

First in 1970 did the word” recruits ” soldiers up again in a form of a professional, constable privates.

Already in the early times of the regimental histories, the idea of that the guardsmen shall be bigger and stronger then all other regiments. Its comes out from among other things of,
that king Frederick VI (4) in 1729 “Gave” King Friederich Wilhelm of Prussia, 2 guardsmen recruits on 188 cm height in 1765 the minimum Guard height was 172,9 cm and in 1817 did it become 175 cm, that still is the current height for the Danish Royal Life Guard.

The king wanted to have high and wonderful soldiers in the royal guard.
The Royal Life Guard uniforms has been though the time, been influence of international uniform mode. When the Guard paraded for the first time march though the streets of Copenhagen to Amalien-castle ( Amalienbord), the 10 marts 1794, were the guards dress with the big triangular hats with tall, white and light blue pompon, besides were they dress in red with light blue cuff, and white tighten pants with black leggings that went over the knees.

The present guard uniforms are not set in on specify time, but are the results of a development of over 3 centuries.

The gala uniform red color was introduce around 1660, the white leather clothes came in 1757
, saber tassel came in 1783 , chest shield on the white cross bandoleer 1788, the bearskin hat was first in its first design introduce in 1803-1805, the ligth blue pants with white stripes came in 1822, the royal name tag the “Rex’s” was introduce in 1842,the dark blue coat introduce as ” battle uniform ” in 1848 during the first Schleswig war, the blue bespids cap with white tassel came in 1852 and the white rifle strap in 1955.

The blue guard uniform, that the royal life guard wear is still in use of our present day. It was introduce during or before the 1st Schleswig war started 1848-1850 as the infantry new field uniform. To it they still had the bearskins cap, also in the field they use the bearskin cap.

In the second Schleswig war 1864 were the white cross bandoleer replace by a more modern black leather harness, that wore the cartridge bag, a short infantry saber and bayonet, also this time the royal life guard went to war with the bearskin cap, last time the guard carried the blue uniform in battle was on the Amalien-castle ( Amalienborg) palace square 9. april 1940 when the German invasion and occupation of Denmark started.

The black leather guard bag with its four flaming bombs and the royal monogram, comes from its original design from 1806, It is the cartridge bag which once had the paper cartridge for the old flintlock and precisions muskets in.

The Guard saber ” life guard saber model 1854 ” is designed in French circa. 1800 after Napoleons defeat at waterloo in 1815. were big amounts of these sabers seize by germen (Prussia) troops. At the distribution of the war booty after the victory over the Schleswig-Holstein rebels during the first Schleswig war 1848-1850 allots of the sabers the royal life guard.

In between of the special task with the guard uniform is the saber tassels color.

Staff company colors, karmoisinred, which also is use by the Tambourcorps, high red by guardgroup 1, white by guard group 2 and blue by guard group 3.

The chest shield shows the 3 Danish lions, the 2 schleswig lions and the 3 Nordic union crowns. the purpose of the chest shield is to secure, that the white bandoleers cross each other at the right place to hold parts guard bag and parts saber and bayonet.

The guardsmen has 3 different guard uniforms.

The normal ” blue guard ” that is in use in weekdays, blue guard gala that is like the ” blue gala ” just supplemented with a white catch string to the bearskins cap , and is used by official opportunities, the last one is the finest uniform is the red guard gala, wears on the monarchs birthday, by official receiving of foreign “head of states”. And by other special opportunities.
